Description

Located out of our Calgary office and reporting into the Supervisor, Markets & Strategic Initiatives, the Senior Analyst, Strategic Initiatives, will play a key role in supporting strategic decision-making through financial analysis, market intelligence, and business planning. 

 

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of strategy, commercial development, and energy markets, evaluating growth opportunities, developing financial models, and delivering insights that influence executive and Board-level decisions. The successful candidate will combine strong analytical capabilities with commercial acumen to support long-term planning, investment assessments, market research, and strategic initiatives in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • Develop financial models and valuation analyses using sound valuation principles, incorporating operational, commercial, financing, accounting, and tax considerations.
  • Prepare and present business cases, market analyses, customer proposals, and executive presentations that support strategic decision-making.
  • Conduct market, industry, and competitive research, including analysis of infrastructure developments, producer activity, regulatory trends, and regional supply-demand dynamics.
  • Support strategic planning activities, including long-range planning, financial forecasting, strategic initiative tracking, performance reporting, and development of Board and leadership materials.
  • Collaborate with Business Development, Corporate Development, and commodity teams to evaluate commercial, infrastructure, partnership, and acquisition opportunities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders to align market perspectives, commercial priorities, and strategic objectives.
  • Collaborate with analysts and traders to develop market intelligence, commodity outlooks, and analytical insights that support commercial decision-making.
  • Provide market analysis, scenario planning, and investment assessments to support business development and growth initiatives.
  • Deliver ad hoc analysis, reporting, and presentations for stakeholders across the organization.

Education, Skills and Experience

•    Bachelor’s degree in finance, Economics, Commerce, Engineering, or a related discipline. Advanced education or professional designations such as CFA, CPA, CBV, P.Eng., or MBA (completed or in progress) are considered assets.
•    3 - 5 years of experience in a quantitative, commercial, or analytical role such as commodity trading, business development, investment banking, corporate development, private equity, or management consulting.
•    Experience in energy, commodity marketing, midstream, refining, trading, or related sectors is considered an asset.
•    Strong financial modeling, valuation, research, and analytical capabilities, with advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint.
•    Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including experience with Python, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, AI, or similar analytical and visualization tools.
•    Understanding of North American energy markets, infrastructure, commodity pricing, and market fundamentals.
•    Experience developing forecasts, scenario analyses, business cases, and decision-support tools.
•    Experience utilizing third-party market and industry data sources to support analysis and strategic decision-making.
•    Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into actionable insights.
•    Demonstrated intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Hours

Monday – Friday, 40 hour per week
